Why Getting It Right Matters
Choosing the wrong business structure or missing a registration early on can create expensive compliance problems and tax inefficiencies that are hard to unwind later. We have extensive experience helping NZ businesses get started , and we’ll help you identify and avoid common setup and compliance pitfalls from the outset.
Should I be a sole trader or set up a company?
It depends on your situation. A company can provide limited liability protection and may be suitable for businesses planning to grow, retain profits or bring in investors, but it also has additional compliance requirements. Sole traders are generally simpler and cheaper to run. We’ll talk you through the tax and practical implications of each option.
How long does it take to get set up?
Company incorporation and core tax registrations can usually be completed within a few business days. In straightforward cases, we aim to complete the company and Xero setup within one week once all required information and signed documents have been received. IRD, Companies Office and other third-party processing times may vary.
When do I need to register for GST?
You must register for GST when your taxable turnover is at least $60,000 in a 12-month period, or you expect it to reach at least $60,000 in the next 12 months. You can also register voluntarily if your turnover is below the threshold.
